Cell Phone on a Budget

I decided to write this post in case anyone is looking for ways in your budget to cut back. Also, in case you've considered alternative cell phone plans I'll give you the results of our search.

For the past few years Monica has had a cell phone and we've been paying about $30 a month for the service. Since moving to Kansas City her usage dropped dramatically and we found that most of the calls could have been avoided. Since she already has a work cell phone that she can use during the day in case of emergency we canceled her personal plan and chose a less expensive route. After doing some research we decided to go with Boost Mobile (part of the Sprint/Nextel family). We bought the phone at Best Buy for about $40. The phone is pretty basic, no real major bells and whistles. The phone came with a $5 credit on it and each call with Boost costs about $.05 per minute. That is the cheapest per call rate we found. Other brands we explored were Virgin Mobile, Verizon, T-Mobile, GoPhone (AT&T), and some other no-name brands. Part of the deal with these pre-pay plans is that you have to re-up with more minutes on a regular basis, with Boost the requirement is to add more minutes every 90 days.

That's all I got for you, if you have any questions or comments feel free to holler.
